An Advance Directive is an estate planning document that allows you to appoint another person to make medical decisions for you, should you become incapacitated and cannot communicate for yourself. It also allows you to dictate what level of treatment you would like to receive in certain serious health care situations if you are unable to communicate for yourself. An Advance Directive is only applicable if you are incapacitated and no longer applies if you regain the capability to make your own medical decisions or you pass away.
What are the benefits of an Advance Directive?
An Advance Directive puts you in control of your medical care and alleviates the burden placed upon loved ones who would otherwise be forced to make decisions on your behalf, and who may have no knowledge of your wishes.
